Countdown to 8 Billion

The 4-billionth person was born during 1974. But how long did it take to get to this point? It wasn’t until 1803 that the 1 billion population mark was made, with the next billion taking 124 years (and another 33 years for the world’s population to grow to 3 billion.)

On July 11, 1987, the United Nations dubbed Matej Mitja Gaspar the 5-billionth human being to join the world. Matej was born in Zagreb, Croatia. The Guardian invited Norman Myers, a celebrated British environmentalist, to observe this population milestone of the 5th billionth person.

Adnan Mevic was born on October 12, 1999. When Adnan was just 2 days old, U.N. Secretary General Kofi Annan paid a visit to the Sarajevo hospital where Adnan was born and declared the newborn as the 6-billionth person to join the world’s growing population. Adnan’s picture circulated around the world.

And the 7th-billion person? Well, on October 31, 2011, 4 babies were born, all of whom were declared to be the 7-billionth newborn. They were Danica May Camacho of the Philippines, Nargis of India, Muthumali of Sri Lanka, and Peter of London.

The United Nations Population Division keeps track of the population milestones of the 4-billionth, 5-billionth, 6-billionth, and 7-billionth people born. The 8-billionth person to join the world could be born in Africa, which has the highest population growth rate amidst major areas. Sub-Saharan Africa’s population is expected to double by the year 2050. Factors like fertility rates, an increase in life expectancy and international migration should not be overlooked.

The arrival of the 8-billionth person is anticipated to take place by the end of 2022 or within the first few months of 2023.

Who will be baby 8 billion, and where will they be born?
